Azura Selous Game Reserve

If you are looking for an authentic African safari that is stylish, personal and filled with lots of wow factor then Azura Selous is exactly what you are looking for. There is nothing like Azura Selous in terms of style or concept in southern Tanzania, the Selous really is the best kept secret waiting to be discovered.

The design of the lodge offers wow factor on every level. There is a stunning infinity pool overlooking the river rapids at our uniquely designed main camp area, and our 12 air conditioned tented villas offer every creature comfort as well as opulent stone bathrooms and private plunge pools.

Guests love the location which feels like a private concession as you are unlikely to see another car during your entire stay. The whole beauty of being 4 / 5 hours drive away from most of the other Selous lodges gives Azura Selous a competitive advantage to offer guests a truly authentic and special safari experience.

Expert guides take you on varied and exciting game drives where you experience magical moments with the Selous wildlife, what makes your stay extra special is that you won’t be sharing these game experiences with other game vehicles, just you.

Above and beyond the game drives, we offer wonderful walking safaris, fishing activities, spa treatments and all our dining is private to ensure your stay is intimate and personal.

Game Drives

You will normally do at least one game drive per day, tracking and looking for wildlife, following fresh footprints or off-roading through ravines to get the perfect photo. Azura Selous is lucky enough to be home range for 3 prides of lion (the Azura pride has up to 21 members) and some 6 highly territorial leopards nearby, with one female and her cub particularly fond of lazing in a tree and posing for the camera. There are more wild dog in the Selous than anywhere else in Africa, and whilst they can roam up to 40km a day, and can be difficult to spot, we have been lucky enough that one of the area’s 3 wild dog packs has denned near us for 2 of the past 3 years, giving our guests daily sightings of pups from June to October.

All game drives are in custom made LandRover 4 x 4 vehicles that have open sides and raised seating, ideal for comfortable game viewing and photography. The cars hold from 2-6 people, so the whole experience of coming to stay with us is a very personal one. Game drives are best taken from sunrise, accompanied by a bush breakfast, then again late afternoon, loaded with sundowner snacks and drinks. We are not constrained by time or distance, our guides are the best trained in the Selous, and will take great pride in showing you all that this vast reserve has to offer. We are often able to offer a private vehicle, which can be guaranteed for a supplement.

Walking Safaris

Walking safaris offer guests the rare chance to get up-close and personal with the 'little five', as well as learn about the relationship between flora and fauna, and the medicinal values of the plants that thrive in the Selous. A highly educational and uniquely enlightening experience, walking safaris follow the tracks, sights, smells and sounds of animals big and small into the wilds of Africa, accompanied by your guide and an armed Park Ranger.

Night Game Drives

The Selous Game Reserve is one of only a few locations in Tanzania where night drives are permitted, and Azura is the only camp in the reserve to offer this unique experience. As the light fades and predators shake off the heat of the day and become more active, enjoy the exhilaration of driving through the bush in search of them. Witness leopard, lion and hyena on the prowl for their prey. It is also an excellent opportunity for spotting smaller cats such as civets and genets. A Park Ranger accompanies these drives and additional Park fees may apply.

The Great Ruaha River where we are situated acts as a life force for abundant wildlife including a large listing of endemic, aquatic and migratory birds. Fish Eagle stay perched high above looking for prey, their familiar screech filling the air just before they dive towards their target. Water birds include Goliath Herons skimming the water’s surface in search of fish, whilst flocks of Egyptian Geese fly by and land on the banks and tickbirds groom snoozing hippos.

The Selous is a spectacular birding destination with over 440 bird species being recorded. Some birds to look out for include the African Skimmer, White-crowned Lapwing, Spotted-flanked Barbet, Palm-nut Vulture, Chestnut-backed Finch-lark, Open-billed Storks, Golden Pipit and the Rock Pratincole. Our guides love sharing their knowledge of all the bird life that is located in the Selous Game Reserve.

Under the supervision of your guide you might also like to try your hand at fishing, as we have the best fishing spots in the Selous. The fast flowing Great Ruaha is home to many species of fish, including the Electric Catfish, and sought after Tiger Fish, which is a regular catch for our guests. The rapids right in front of camp offer up 'Squeakers' aplenty, so called because they produce a squeaking sound as a warning to both predators and competitors during spawning time, which makes them an exciting catch for even our younger guests. We have all the equipment needed and this is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, while watching the sun set with a beer or glass of house wine in hand.

Boating is the perfect way to get up close to the numerous pods of hippo that frequent Great Ruaha River by Azura Selous. View the attendant birdlife and giant Hamerkop nests as you gently glide on by, followed by a romantic sundowner set-up on the river’s edge. Our specialist lightweight boat takes 2-4 people, and provides a wonderful opportunity to view the river’s wildlife from a different perspective.

Azura African Spa

Relax and unwind from the daily safari adventures with a soothing pamper session by the pool, or a massage on the deck of your tented villa to the sounds of the river and its attendant wildlife. Enjoy our African inspired treatments using natural organic ingredients like the highly prized Marula or Baobab oils. Relax, revive, renew.

Family Safaris

Discovering Africa as a family is a special experience. At Azura Selous we welcome children over the age of 6, sharing a tented villa with their parents. We really know how to take care of families, and consider ourselves experts in what children love to see and learn about (we provide a special children’s workbook for kids staying with us).

We personalise your stay as a family, providing your own guide and vehicle whenever possible. As well as taking game drives, our guides will offer a variety of educational activities including tracking lessons, traditional bow and arrow making, bush walks around camp, and learning the Swahili names for our wildlife. All activities and meal times are of course tailored to your needs.

Please note, you will need to be comfortable that we are an unfenced property and animals regularly walk in the camp, which is all part of the excitement of a stay.
