Chitabe Camp

Refurbished in June 2018, Chitabe Camp has all the classic Okavango Delta scenery to be enjoyed — open floodplains, waterways, marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodland, riverine areas and open grasslands. In this fascinating mix diverse and prolific wildlife can be seen, from elephant to impala and lion to wild dog. The camp is situated in a private concession area on a beautiful island. In contrast with the areas further north, this area is a fascinating mosaic of mopane and acacia bushveld, riverine forest and the perennial delta hosting diverse wildlife and birds.

Chitabe's eight spacious tents are built on elevated wooden decks amongst the trees. Each tent has twin beds, a private bathroom and an indoor as well as an outdoor shower. The thatched dining area, pub and lounge area are built on raised decks to provide superb views across the floodplain, and a pool allows guests to cool off in the heat of the day.

The multiplicity of habitats by which Chitabe is surrounded means there is an abundance of wildlife to be seen, including elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, tsessebe and impala. Wild dogs are also occasionally sighted. Night drives provide opportunities for guests to see nocturnal mammals such as civet, serval, genet, porcupine and aardwolf. Activities include day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, nature walks and spectacular bird watching. The camp also has two elevated hides located in the reserve, one of which is within walking distance. Guests can experience a "sleep out" under the stars in full comfort and safety.

The camp’s eight spacious Meru-style tents are raised on wooden decks under large, shady trees. Each tent has twin beds, en-suite facilities and indoor and outdoor showers. Fine-art wildlife photos are featured in each tent.

Activities at Chitabe revolve around day and night game drives and guided nature walks.

HABITAT AND WILDLIFE
The 28 000-hectare (69 000-acre) Chitabe Concession, situated in the south-east of the Okavango Delta, is separated from the well-known Moremi Game Reserve by the Gomoti Channel. This eastern half of the concession is characterised by grassy floodplains which separate the Channel from acacia and mopane woodland. The western half of the concession has as its boundary the Santantadibe River and here a variety of typical Okavango habitats – seasonal palm-dotted floodplains, to wooded islands, tranquil waterways and dry woodland – ensure a year-round variety of game viewing and birding experiences. It is this diversity and a mix of Okavango and Kalahari habitats that makes Chitabe unique and which allows good concentrations of all the larger predators – lion, leopard, spotted hyaena, cheetah and wild dog – as well as herbivores like giraffe, buffalo, lechwe, tsessebe, impala and elephant.
