Finch Hattons Camp

Set in 35 acres in the heart of Tsavo West National Park, Finch Hattons offers a chance to experience the thrill of a true African safari without foregoing the opulence afforded by contemporary comforts. With just 17 tented suites, surrounding the hippo pools fed by the fresh water springs of Mt Kilimanjaro and the Chyulu Hills, the camp is the ideal combination of adventure and intimacy.
Discover the safari of a bygone era; a camp built to be minimally intrusive, while combining the modern day luxuries of any 5 star boutique hotel. Fusing modern design with rustic charm, you will experience the authentic African sights, sounds, tastes and smells.
Everything is designed to tantalise each of your senses. With over two decades of providing unparalelled personalised service, you will leave wondering how we have fulfilled even your unexpressed wishes and find yourself already planning your next stay.
Each of the 17 luxury suites seamlessly combines African roots with elegance and luxury. They’re elevated to offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, and guarantee absolute privacy for our guests. The tents’ open-plan design invites the cool breeze that drifts over the nearby natural springs, bringing the sounds and scents of the bush directly to you.
Tents are constructed of the very best sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. The roof above your tent is made from sustainably sourced makuti palm leaves, which provide shade and have a natural cooling effect. The bright Tsavo sun is used to warm the solar hot water heaters. Rest assured, however, that the heating systems aren’t affected by cloudy days, and a hot shower with ample water pressure will always be ready and waiting for you. Large sliding netted doors help prevent mosquitoes and other insects from entering your space.
Luxury Tented Suites
Each suite is specially designed with multi-level elevated decks designed to give you unspoiled views of the surrounding hippo pools and the camp’s water hole, whether you’re on the deck or inside your suite. Lose yourself in the great African outdoors while indulging in the elite conveniences of a five-star lodge
Two Bedroom Family Suites
Family suites feature two separate en-suite bedrooms, a spacious communal lounge and an outdoor seating area on the deck, making it ideal for families or friends travelling together.

Game Drives
Most people tend to forget about Tsavo and why it is amongst the top pick of many experienced safari guides. Being Kenya's largest game park and with so few lodges in the area, you will soon understand why. The park is amongst the most iconic in Kenya with its diverse landscapes and is rich history.
While the best game viewing is generally in the coolness of the early mornings or late afternoons, you are free to decide how long and when you would like to set out for your game drive. Using only open-sided vehicles, you can experience the quintessential African landscape and the wide range of birds and flora & fauna that thrive in the surrounding area.
Night Game Drives
Head into the park after sunset for a chance to discover some of the more nocturnal species of Tsavo. Setting off after dark offers another adventure as you explore the vastness of the park by moonlight and experience the night sounds of the bush.
Chyulu Sundowners
Settle down at the foot of the Chyulu Hills in time for cocktails and canapés as the sun sets over Tsavo with Mt Kilimanjaro in the backdrop. This is truly one of the best ways to end the day before heading back to camp.
Guided Bush Walks & Hikes
Get a little more up-close and personal with the park's flora and fauna on a guided nature walk. You will be accompanied by an experienced guide and armed ranger who will be happy to share their vast knowledge of how nature lives and thrives in Tsavo.
Among our favourite hiking locations is the Chyulu Hills Forest. The gentle gradient of the forest is more comfortable to the novice hiker and provides a haven from which to explore the several species of bids, plants and wildlife that inhabit the area. Our guides can easily point out animal tracks as well as the medicinal uses for various plants during these hikes.
There are several other hiking options available in the area and each offers a unique experience.
Bush Breakfast
Though there are several different dining areas at camp, why not enjoy a gourmet breakfast served in the heart of the bush. After your morning game drive, rather than heading back to camp, we will set up a full breakfast somewhere along the way for a real al-fresco experience.
Bird Watching
Home to over 500 species of birds, Tsavo is a real birders paradise. A lot of these species can easily be spotted without leaving the luxury of your private viewing deck as many of them reside around the hippo pools however our guides can easily spot these out to you during game drives or bush walks.
Chyulu Spa and Wellness Centre
Who says going on safari means you can't indulge your mind, body and spirit all at once? The Chyulu Spa and Wellness Centre offers a wide range of treatments and therapies using the finest Africology products. The spa also features a secondary swimming pool, a hamam, a small gym and an elevated yoga deck from which you can continue to spot game during your practice.
Cultural Visits
Iltilal is the closest village to Finch Hattons and home to a large Maasai community. We have developed a close relationship with the village and can easily organise cultural visits here for a chance to gain some insight into their daily way of life. The Maasai are a very welcoming tribe and are always happy to invite you into their homes for a closer glimpse into their lifestyle.
Little Explorers Club
Families make up a big part of our guests at Finch Hattons. To make sure that adults and children alike make the most of every experience during their stay, we have set up a dedicated children's club. Our staff will look after your children and teach them a variety of skills including bush survival skills, learning about the local flora and fauna, tracking animal prints and learning to make their own bow and arrow (to name just a few).
Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp is located in Kenya’s pristine Tsavo West National Park.
Tsavo is Kenya’s oldest and largest national park. Dating to 1948 and totalling nearly 22,000 square kilometres, it is six times the size of the Maasai Mara and larger than a number of European countries.
Tsavo’s immense size makes it home to more landscapes, ecosystems, fauna and flora than you could ever witness in a single visit. Its rainforests and semi-arid scrublands beg for exploration, while its volcanic lava fields, Jurassic-age granite monoliths and ancient caves offer endless opportunities for walks and hikes. Over 12,000 elephants roam Tsavo’s plains, as well the largest population of red elephant in East Africa. Gaze upwards and you will find 500 species of bird native to the area, making Tsavo a twitcher’s paradise. In the distance, Kilimanjaro’s peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi, only visible from Tsavo National Park, are omniscient, immense and silent.
Given Tsavo’s sheer enormity and its unique eco-system, it has a very diverse landscape. From the cloud forest on the Chyulu Hills, semi-arid scrub, volcanic lava fields, Jurassic age granite monoliths and the cliffs of the Yatta plateau, one of the world’s largest at roughly 290km long, one can spend days and days and barely scratch the surface of what Tsavo has to offer.
But Tsavo is not just about its landscapes and resident wildlife – exquisite though they are. There’s also something subtler, something more intangible, that makes our home unique. Tsavo offers a particular kind of romance, a glimpse into a prehistoric past, and the chance to leave the world behind entirely. It is this sensation that remains with you long after you leave Tsavo, that continues to echo through your mind, heart and spirit, and that eventually calls you back.
