Diving!

Many of our dive staff, and guests come to Volivoli because of the proximity to Bligh Water, also known as The Vatu-I-Ra Passage—now a marine protected area famous for its abundance and diversity of marine life—which is arguably the best diving in Fiji. The modern dive facility is the most advance in the South Pacific, in terms of the building, structure, equipment, and our compressor room is world class, with four compressors in line and Nitrox. All of the dive boats are brand new and purpose built.

The staff are fully insured, trained in first-aid and water-rescue with training sessions happening on the regular. Many of our dive crew have grown up in and around these waters, spearfishing with bamboo rods and swimming in them multiple times a day throughout their lives, so the know the sites like the backs of their hands. So whether it’s your first time diving, you’re ready to get certified, or want to master a specialty—we have all levels of PADI and SSI certifications here. We love to share the experience with beginners, and to help experienced divers become even more advanced. We’re an instructor training facility, so we can teach everything from a person’s first dive through to them becoming an instructor.

For the more experienced diver, the staff have hand-picked more than 50 incredible dive sites. Most of the best sites are no more than 20 minutes by boat from Volivoli Beach.

Did you come to Fiji to experience the wonders of our azure ocean? As our head divemaster Pola Pagalu says, “What we see underwater is far better than what we see up here, you just have to explore.” We have an endless amount of water-based activities for you to get up close and personal with the deep blue, from snorkeling on our house reef in search of ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, and our resident white frog fish (aptly named ‘Froggy’), kayaking amongst our thriving mangroves, to a dolphin safari, and cruising into the sunset at golden hour, sparkling wine in hand. Kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear are complimentary and for hire from our dive shop, Ra Divers.

Land-based Tours

Prefer to keep your feet on dry land? Volivoli has plenty of land-based activities for everyone that will immerse you into the heart and soul of Fijian culture. Your tour guide Soni, is a kaumatua (village elder), originally from Rakiraki, who knows the area and its local people intimately. He’s also our former dining room manager—who worked for the Darling family for 15 years. He strives to preserve the Fijian culture by sharing the colourful history and traditions with our guests. Soni has carefully curated tours that explore the area’s dramatic landscapes, lush tropical forests, spectacular waterfalls, bustling markets, remote villages, and rich history. We also offer culinary adventures from the resort featuring the unique array of local foods, produce and culture we have here in Rakiraki.

SPORTS

Volivoli Beach is the water sports hub for the North of Viti Levu, and the deep water bay means that water sports are possible at high or low tide, unlike many other resorts in Fiji. We offer a range of exciting water sports, including world-class diving with incredible marine life and fascinating shipwrecks to explore. For those who’d prefer to stay dry there are plenty of other things to do.

Kayaking

Get your heart racing or simply float around… Volivoli Beach has a great selection of good good quality sea kayaks which are free for our guests to use. The water here is so clear you’ll be able to watch brightly colored tropical fish and bright blue starfish as you paddle around. It’s up to you how much you want to do in your kayak. You could pack a picnic and spend the whole day afloat. Or you might prefer a more adventurous kayak around the bay to explore the hidden coves and mangrove forests. Or you can simply float around listening to the gentle splash of your paddles.

SUP’ing (Stand Up Paddle-boarding) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and for good reason. SUP is a great way to get your daily workout in while on holiday or simply cruise the bay and take in the sights.

Snorkeling

Boasting some of the best snorkeling in Fiji, the waters around Volivoli Beach are full of colorful soft coral and marine life. What’s more, you can snorkel at any time of day, as the deep water bay means low tide isn’t a problem. The staff can give you a quick lesson if you’ve never snorkeled before, and snorkels, masks and fins are available for hire from our Dive shop. The snorkeling trips to the outer reef are highly recommended. You’ll travel by boat in a small group, accompanied by an experienced instructor who will show you the different coral and fish species. Snorkeling trips to the outer reef.

Beach Voli-ball

It’s time to work up a sweat! By the end of a hard day’s sunbathing you might have worked up just enough energy to take part in a social game of beach ‘voli-ball’ (volleyball). A game generally takes place at four o’clock each day, and usually ends rather reluctantly at sunset. You don’t need to be an expert to join in, but you do need to be willing to get a bit sandy! The beach bar stays open until dark, just perfect for some cold refreshments after an energetic game.

Village Visit

Departure 9am — Approximate Return 12pm (3 hours) - Come and see the way our iTaukei (local, indigenous people) live and experience authentic Fijian village life with your guide Soni.

You’ll be warmly welcomed in the traditional way, by the turanga ni koro (village chief) followed by a kava ceremony, where you’ll have the opportunity to taste Fiji’s national drink by sharing a bowl (or two) with the village leaders. Then, you’ll have a chance to take a look around the village, chat with the locals, listen to stories and legends, take photos, and experience the beautiful, simple-yet-intricate way Fijians live together in their villages.
