Galapagos Master

An exquisite piece of paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean, &Beyond Benguerra Island is a luxury beach holiday destination where time stands still and legends come to life.

Situated on the second largest island in the sunny Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique, the lodge is set in a protected marine conservation area and offers pristine beaches and unspoiled coral reefs teeming with marine life. Looking out onto a sandy beach and set on a deep lagoon unaffected by the tides, this exclusive beach getaway is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Surrounded by premier diving sites, the lodge is the gateway to an underwater wonderland for divers, with a rich variety of tropical fish species complemented by Africa’s only population of the rare dugong. The deep Mozambique Channel, which runs alongside the island, is renowned for its game fish and Benguerra Island offers some of the world’s best catch-and-release deep sea fishing and fly fishing opportunities.

While the island is fringed with golden, sandy beaches, its interior is a lush patchwork of forests, wetlands and fresh water lakes.

Cabana
Two cabanas are set under local thatch, amongst a lush island forest. The cabanas boast a light and airy colour scheme that combines tropical chic with a distinct African feel and reminders of the area’s Portuguese heritage. The cozy interiors of the cabanas makes them perfect for couples and honeymooners. The cabanas are slightly smaller than casinhas and vertical in shape. There is no sitting area in the cabanas, however a lounger is located at the foot of the bed. The ensuite bathroom features an outdoor shower and is located behind the bed. The cabanas offer private timber decks and cool rim flow pools. There is also a private sala with a hanging daybed, as well as private sun loungers situated on the beach.

Casinha
Ten casinhas are set under local thatch, amongst a lush island forest. The casinhas boast a light and airy colour scheme that combines tropical chic with a distinct African feel and reminders of the area’s Portuguese heritage. An ensuite bathroom is located on one side of the bedroom and a small sitting area is located on the other side of the bed. The casinhas offer private timber decks and cool rim flow pools. There is also a private sala with a hanging daybed, as well as private sun loungers situated on the beach.

Dugong Conservation
Hunted by humans for thousands of years, the endangered dugong is a rare marine mammal related to the manatee. The protected waters surrounding &Beyond Benguerra Island have become a haven for this semi-nomadic animal, which means the conservation of this sensitive habitat has become one of the critical projects for &Beyond’s Ocean Without Borders initiative. Fishing nets and community fishing have been identified as the single greatest threat to the dugong. Working in conjunction with Africa Foundation (&Beyond’s community development partner) and the island’s local community, the Benguerra conservation team have embarked on a strategy to establish alternative food sources and livelihoods to reduce the community’s dependency on the ocean’s resources. Vegetable gardens have already been planted to solve some of these issues, and the teams are actively researching alternative protein sources for the island’s inhabitants.

WILDchild programme
andBeyond’s WILDchild programme, designed especially for children visiting our safari lodges and camps in Africa, is filled with fun, interactive activities that offer opportunities to learn and discover new experiences and cultures. Deeply rooted in the love for the African bush, it not only creates a series of unforgettable moments for the whole family but forges strong bonds between our young guests, our planet and its people.

There are flights on Airlink and LAM from Johannesburg International airport (OR Tambo) to the newly modernized Vilanculos International Airport (VNX).
