Camp Sossus

Camp Sossus emphasizes every aspect of an intention to redefine immersive exploration and luxury. The camp’s philosophy encompasses privacy, intimacy, experiential focus and total flexibility, all while being perfectly comfortable. The camp offers just six tented guest rooms and is open year-round, providing a great alternative to any traditional lodge or camp in the Sossusvlei area, whilst offering unparalleled opportunities for immersive exploration of the Namib Desert environment. The large west-facing windows and south-facing doors in the tented guest rooms allow natural cooling by the predominant afternoon south westerly wind, and the tents all have a basic infrastructure that offers important comforts. These include semi open-air en suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot bucket showers with locally sourced amenities, comfortable extra-length three-quarter twin beds, solar lighting, 220V electrical charging station, pedestal fan, shaded patio, shaded day-bed and a magnificent star bed. The essence of the camp therefore remains both experiential and immersive.

The eight spacious Meru-style tents include two which can be used for family use, which allow for a more intimate stay. Each of the 4m x 3m tents come with a roof constructed from recycled oil drums and a natural stone wall on the east side to protect from the wind. Guests will also be able to make use of an en-suite open-air bathroom comprising a flush toilet, washbasin and bucket shower with fitted solar lighting. Each tent has access to its own star bed, the perfect venue from which to gaze up at the night sky – a truly magical experience.

During your stay you will still be able to explore the dunes at Sossusvlei – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest desert in the world – but also retreat to the private conservancy which acts as a natural buffer from the harshest desert conditions and is a vital refuge for wildlife, particularly in the dry season.

Camp Sossus is the perfect choice for those wanting to explore the Sossusvlei area, while also getting off the beaten track and having the chance to spot wildlife. Activities here are focused on visiting the dunes at Sossusvlei (including Dead Vlei) along with your private guide, exploring the private reserve on nature walks and drives, cooling off in the desert pools, stargazing and guided biking excursions. There is plenty of wildlife to keep an eye out for, with oryx, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, Burchell’s zebra, bat-eared fox and aardwolf all found on the reserve, as well as predators such as cheetah, leopard and both brown and spotted hyena.
