Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp

Located in the remote Western Corridor of the Serengeti, Grumeti provides a private Serengeti experience with exclusive game viewing in some of the most secluded parts of Africa’s most famous game reserve. Its rustic yet sophisticated safari tents are tucked into the shade of an evergreen forest on the banks of a tributary of the famous Grumeti River. Black and white colobus monkeys chatter in the foliage and chase each other over the thatched roofs of the tented suites. A resident pod of hippo grunts and grumbles from beneath a layer of luscious green water weeds in the tranquil pool in front of the camp.

Game drives from the camp can expect to encounter large lion prides and clans of hyena up to a hundred strong, as well as the great herds of Tanzania’s annual Great Migration. Each year, the masses of wildebeest and zebra cross the waters of the Grumeti River, home to some of Africa’s largest crocodile, in search of fresh grazing grounds.

A Day at Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp

Morning Game Drive

As dawn breaks over the Serengeti, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a brand new day. Get ready for your morning safari before meeting your guide over a fragrant cup of tea or coffee and some delicious rusks or biscuits to decide what you hope to see and do that day. Set out in an open 4x4 safari vehicle to explore the quintessential landscapes of the Serengeti. If you are travelling in June or July, the Great Migration may be passing through the area. Your guide will attempt to predict the movements of the herds and maybe even intercept the wildebeest as they are crossing the Grumeti River.

During the other months of the year, you will set off to track the spectacular resident wildlife. Even though the Serengeti is a national park, Grumeti is situated in an area that is not easily accessible to vehicles from other camps and you will see relatively few other tourists on your game drive. This is a good time to look out for the cheetah that roam the open plains of the Western Serengeti, while you may also come across leopard or lion enjoying their prize from the night’s hunt. Your guide will break for a hot drink and a snack to refresh you.

Sated from a morning filled with the sights and sounds of Africa, return to the camp for a delicious breakfast, with a platter of fresh fruit, cheese, homemade preserves and freshly baked bread delivered to your table, followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes.

There’s time for an indulgent siesta before lunch, which is served on the open decks overlooking the river. Delight your taste buds with a mezze platter piled with delicious dishes, accompanied by healthy salads and bread still hot from the oven or build your own burger from a selection of gourmet ingredients. Some days you may be invited into the boma to choose the ingredients for your own personalised pizza, which will be cooked for you in the traditional stone oven.

Afternoon Tea

Cool off with a refreshing dip in the camp’s pool or spend the early afternoon watching the frolics of our resident family of hippo. Meeting once again over late afternoon tea, your guide will discuss the plans for the afternoon game drive.

Afternoon Game Drive

Head off in search of wildlife once again in the afternoon. Large herds of buffalo and families of elephant are likely to be found near the river at this time, drinking and splashing in the water before settling down for the night.

The immense crocodiles in the Grumeti River will be basking on the shores in the dying light of the sun, while you may get a glimpse of hippo getting ready to emerge onto dry land for their night time graze.

The area’s large lion prides are likely to be on the move as they warm up for the nights hunt and the whooping calls of hyena can be heard as immense clans of up to a hundred individuals keep in touch with one another. Stop at a scenic spot for sundowners as the sun sinks beneath the endless plains before heading back to the luxury of the camp.

As you gather before dinner, a tempting array of healthy and delicious bite-sized snacks will be served to ward off any potential hunger pangs. Dinner begins with a homemade East African soup or a light, flavourful salad, followed by a hearty and wholesome meal enjoyed beneath the stars.

Desert provides a last decadent and irresistible treat as you relax around a blazing fire and contemplate the latest day’s adventures on your African safari before heading back to your tent and the comfort of your king-sized bed.

Situated in the Western Corridor of the renowned Serengeti National Park, wildlife viewing at &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti National Park is truly exceptional throughout the year. The camp’s location on a tributary of the Grumeti River means that it is ideally positioned for sightings of dramatic river crossings when the famous Great Wildebeest Migration is in the area. However, the wildlife experience can be even more spectacular when the Migration is not nearby, with a staggering density of year-round wildlife and relatively few tourists encountered in this part of the reserve. While the camp itself is sheltered in the riverside thickets and provides beautiful views of a river bend inhabited by hippo, game drives venture out into the wide open plains, where guests can enjoy the quintessential Serengeti landscapes in open 4x4 safari vehicles with canvas canopies. With the Grumeti River providing a permanent water source, the area is particularly rich in predators, with massive lion prides and extensive clans of hyena numbering up to a hundred frequently spotted. The river also attracts large herds of buffalo and elephant, while the open plains are the ideal habitat for cheetah. Riverside drives are bound to spot the massive crocodiles that the area is renowned for, while birders will be amazed by the number of endemic species spotted throughout the area. The thickets near the camp are home to colobus monkeys, which cannot be seen anywhere else in the Serengeti, while the area also plays host to a far lesser known migration, during which large numbers of topi antelope move across the plains.

A hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti is the quintessential safari experience, providing a magnificent perspective onto this vast and truly African landscape. Grumeti is the ideal area for this scenic flight, providing eagle’s eye views of the winding river, with its massive crocodiles and lounging hippos, as well as the wide open plains scattered with wildlife.
