Ol Malaika Home
The Trust is located right on the edge of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in the little town of Sekenani. The Olmalaika Home - is a safe haven for girls under the age of 12 yrs all the way down to newborns that have endured trauma in their lives, such as female genital mutilation, childhood marriage, rape, incest, assault, abuse, abandonment, etc.
The Trust not only provides a safe and loving home where they can find healing, but also enable them to get their education. On weekends and holidays you can visit the home and spend time with the girls, listen to them sing and dance, participate in a typical "day of the girl child" where you might wash clothes in the river, make chapatis, drink some tea made over the fire in their traditional manyatta or simply allow them to teach you how to make a beaded bracelet to take home. On weekdays when they are in school, you can visit the home and meet the staff, play or feed the babies, hear about the girls stories and possibly sample some fresh fruit or vegetable from their garden.
The Trust is dependent on donations, but are working on becoming self sustaining by harvesting and selling honey from their own hives and thru the Olmalaika Trust Days for Girls Enterprise - where the staff make fabric reusable menstrual kits. Each kit that is purchased is given to school girls in Kenya so that no girl will miss school because of her period.
