Mystic Sands has teamed up with our friends, San Francisco based company Humpback Swims, which organizes adventure swimming, snorkeling and diving tours world wide.

If you are coming to Tonga to swim with the whales and you are interested in staying with us you can book your whale tours with them (which we are happy to facilitate).

Whale season in Vava'u is mid-July through October. Some days are sunny; some days are cloudy. The weather is warm, but you'll want to bring a wind jacket to keep you comfortable on the boat. Water temperature is around 77 F (25 C).

Vava'u, in our opinion, is the best place in the world for in-water encounters with humpback whales. Only snorkeling is allowed with the whales as they don't like divers' bubbles, and it's hard to keep up with whales on SCUBA. The topography of the islands allows us to work in most conditions, excluding intense weather days of course.

We will go out and swim with the whales in most conditions; the weather and seas don't seem to affect the whales at all. We search for the whales in calm, sheltered bays, open sea — pretty much wherever the day takes us!

Other activities: snorkeling, diving, kayaking, paddle boarding, plus loads of other activities available in town. Don’t forget church on Sunday - it’s the Tonga thing to do.

If you wish to support our local school and Tongan's in general the best thing you can do is to bring some school supplies. The literacy rate in Tonga is very good but the school is not completely free and many parents struggle to pay school fees and equipment.

In the beginning of each term parents are supposed to bring crayons, pens, paper and pencils to share for the class. These are items that are small and easy to carry so if you wish to help the local community in our village these are things you can bring.

If you bring something we are happy to take you to the local school so you can donate it yourself and see how it things work here or you can give it to us and we will make sure it gets taken to the right place.
