Phinda Homestead

Deep within the Kenya Masai Mara National Reserve, Rekero offers a spectacular location from which to watch the Great Migration as the wildebeest thunder across the river just outside camp. This traditional East African Kenya camp evokes the romance of safaris from a bygone era. The elegant tents form a tranquil oasis perched strategically above the mighty Talek River of the Mara tented camp. The sweeping views from camp take in the surrounding plains of the Maasai Mara, which support some of the greatest concentrations and diversity of wildlife in Africa. The cherry on top is the warm hospitality of our team and our world-renowned game-viewing guides with years of expertise – in such good hands, you are ensured an incomparable Masai Mara Kenya safari experience.

Rekero is an intimate, comfortable and relaxed riverside safari camp where you are enfolded by the surrounding African wilderness. Hippos grunt in the pools below, the smell of wild sage drifts through the air and herds of wildebeest often can be seen crossing the Talek River from the main deck. This blissful location means that fantastic game viewing can continue, even when relaxing in camp. The friendly and highly skilled camp crew have worked together for many years; together with our internationally recognized guiding team, they create a truly insightful safari experience every time.

Rekero’s nine spacious tents are laid out along the river’s edge under a network of shady trees. Designed in classic safari style with a fresh, contemporary edge, each tent has an en-suite bathroom with hot-water showers and flushing toilet. To make them even more comfortable, each tent has a large private veranda with an inviting day bed or couch where you can take in a view of the river.

Rekero Camp is perfectly located to allow you to experience and explore every corner of the Maasai Mara. Activities focus on truly superb game viewing with internationally renowned guides.

Game drives
Wildlife viewing and birdwatching game drives – in the expert company of experienced Il Dorobo and Maasai guides – are offered twice daily from Rekero. These can be tailored to specific needs and interests for astounding game viewing at every opportunity. We use closed game-viewing vehicles with rooftop hatches that allow you to stand, each equipped with powerpoints so you can recharge your devices.

Bush picnics
Maximize your time on the game-filled plains by enjoying a delicious packed breakfast or lunch provided by camp chefs while you’re on the move.

Cultural & community visits
Sharing the cultural aspect of the traditional Maasai way of life is a priority at Rekero. A visit to one of the neighboring villages, which are home to most of our guides, is a highly personal experience that the guides conduct with sensitivity to ensure it remains both unobtrusive and intimate.

Balloon safaris
Glide over the rolling plains of the Maasai Mara and the neighboring conservancies on a romantic and serene hot-air balloon flight and see the wildlife below from a different perspective. (at an additional cost)

Protecting the big cats
Here you’ll find the big cats made famous by BBC and Disney. Learn more from a Kenya Wildlife Trust researcher about how we are trying to protect them. (Bookings essential.)

Horseback riding
They say four legs are better than two, so what better way to experience the bush than on horseback? Ride out across the open plains with the wind in your hair and watch dazzles of zebra and towers of giraffe from atop your stallion.

The very best time for rewarding game viewing is in the cooler early mornings and late afternoons, when the animals are at their most active. Depending on the season, your day may start slightly earlier or later, but the general pace of life in camp is focused on giving you the very best possible game-viewing experience. If you have booked a private game-viewing vehicle do discuss personal schedule preferences with your guide.
