Ocean Sapphire

On a small peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera, Roho ya Selous is in the heart of the Selous Game Reserve, the largest reserve in Africa and home to one of the biggest populations of wild dogs on the continent.

It is a wildlife hotspot, with giraffes and elephants regularly sauntering through camp during the day and the sounds of nearby hippos and lions punctuating the night. With its network of lakes and rivers, this area is known for its water-based activities.

This eight-tent camp is simple and stylish, with evening-breeze cooling systems above the beds making even the hottest nights more comfortable. During the day, cool off in the pool or spot wildlife making its way to the water from an armchair in our shaded dining tent or lounge area. Out and about, explore by vehicle, on foot or even in a boat, with fishing excursions available.

Eight stylish and spacious tents, including one family tent, are tucked away in the trees for maximum privacy. The canvas, bamboo and stone wall-ed tents with  stretched-canvas roofs blend into their natural surroundings. The en suite bathrooms have indoor and outdoor showers. The evening-breeze cooling systems above the beds keep temperatures comfortable during the hottest times of the year.

Game drives
Best for exploring further afield and searching for larger mammals and predators, game drives are a rewarding option for your safari. Drives are enjoyed in a seven-seater, open-sided vehicle with tiered seating, every guest is assured of an uninterrupted view of the wildlife. The vehicle includes a roof for shade, power points for charging your devices, and fridges to keep your sundowner drinks deliciously cool.

Walking safaris
Immerse yourself completely in the rugged environment of the Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) on a walking safari accompanied by an armed expert guide, taking in the smaller details and tracking wildlife on foot.

Boating safaris
No safari is complete without a trip out on the water, passing pods of hippo in the shallows and crocodiles sunning themselves on sandbanks. Watch wildlife come to drink from the ultimate perspective and enjoy drifting up close to bird colonies nesting in the riverbanks or on small islands.

Catch and release fishing
Combine your boat safari with a bit of catch and release fishing, a relaxing way to spend an hour or so in the afternoon. The rivers are home to good populations of tigerfish as well as catfish.

Photographic safaris
Roho ya Selous is home to one of our specially modified photographic vehicles. The open vehicle allows keen amateurs and professional photographers alike to shoot at eye level with wildlife. It is equipped with all the gear to ensure award-winning shots — from beanbags and camera rests to 360° swivel seats. Additional fee applies.
