Shumba Camp

Elegant Shumba, named after the prides of lion seen in the area, is found on a wooded island in the centre of the million-hectare Busanga Plains. Home to hundreds of red lechwe, puku and other plains game and their predators, the wild and remote floodplains seemingly go on forever.

Standing sentry over these endless plains are six luxury tented units raised on wooden platforms. Each spacious unit is a tranquil space from which to observe the wilderness – either from your bed, the various seating areas or even the indoor or outdoor showers.

Enjoy Zambian hospitality in the main area, where sumptuous dining, cooling off in the pool and shaded relaxation are the order of the day, while convivial fireside tales and stargazing are a nightly ritual.

Highlights
  • Meaning ‘lion’, Shumba is aptly named after the prides of lion seen in the area
  • The Plains are home to hundreds of red lechwe, puku, roan and oribi
  • Sail over the Plains in a hot air balloon – the most exclusive wildlife ballooning in Africa

Standard Tents
Shumba’s five luxury tented units offer spacious living with a cushion-strewn veranda for outdoor contemplations. Each tent has both indoor and outdoor showers.

Family Tent
Shumba has one family tent which sleeps four comfortably.

Game drives
On interpretive game drives in open vehicles, guests may view large numbers of plains game such as puku, red lechwe, buffalo and wildebeest and even perhaps the rare roan antelope. The famous lions of Kafue, cheetah and wild dog are also to be seen.

Guided night drives
Led by a knowledgeable guide, night drives offer a glimpse into Busanga Plains’ unique, nocturnal world. A diverse range of species may be seen at night, including genet, civet, owls and occasionally the elusive leopard.

Hot Air Balloon Safari
The most exclusive wildlife ballooning in all of Africa, this activity allows you to take to the skies in style. Gaze over scenic splendour, watch hippo playing far below and fly eye-to-eye with an eagle. This life-changing experience ends with a sumptuous champagne breakfast.

Boating
Early on in the season, the Busanga Plains are still covered in much water. A boating excursion during this time allows for exploration of the channels and their life.

Specialist birding safari
Boasting 491 species, including the endemic Chaplin's barbet, birding enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice on a specialist birding safari. The area is also alive with rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers, herons and large flocks of storks, to name a few.
